Boat Building, Design and Maintenance Galway & Roscommon ETB - Galway City

This course is aimed at retaining traditional boat building and repair skills, and developing new skills in boat design and maintenance. The purpose of this course is to provide students with the information, skills and practical experience necessary to work in the area of boat building.

The course is aimed at those who are interested in boat building and repair as a career and those who wish to pursue boat building and boat maintenance as a hobby.

Course Info

Students gain important practical experience on working with the different technologies and also have the facility to operate machinery used in the boat building industry.

Special Features

The course is completed in one academic year from September to May. Each week there are approximately 20 hours class time over four days and one day work placement in a local boatyard. Students will be required to complete assignment and project work to obtain their overall grade at the end of the year. The college has 2 specially equipped woodwork workshops where students have access to a full range of woodwork machinery and hand tools.

Entry Requirements

FETAC Level 4, minimum of 17 years of age at time of registration, Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied, Equivalent qualifications from other countries, relevant life experiences, relevant work experiences and mature students.

Career Opportunities

The course is completed in one academic year from September to May. Each week there are approximately 20 hours class time over four days and one day work placement in a local boatyard. Students will be required to complete assignment and project work to obtain their overall grade at the end of the year. Prepare you for the workplace or for an apprenticeship in Wooden Boat Building.
