Getting Ready to Teach with Technology

Technology offers numerous innovative tools that many teachers can use in order to enhance the students’ learning experience. However, it is important to note that teaching with technology is not only about keeping up to the date of all the latest teaching tools available, but also about knowing how to effectively integrate them into your teaching.

In this course, you will learn the advantages of using technology, as well as the possible stumbling blocks. Whether you are teaching online or in a traditional classroom, it is hoped that you will get an inside look at the right practices to the use of technology to enhance learning and teaching.

Teaching with the use of technology may invoke many different images, depending on the experience of students or instructors. For some, this might mean the use of student classroom response systems in lectures or PowerPoint presentations. Others may also think of podcasting lectures or the use of certain disciplinary applications.

Although it is natural to consider these tools as a starting point, the use of technology in teaching is more likely to be appropriate and effective when it is integrated into a process of careful planning that includes several factors involved in learning and teaching.

To be able to use technology more effective and maximize its benefits in teaching, instructors need to evaluate the course goals as they do when planning a new course. They need determine what they expect their students will learn from the course, the knowledge and skills they want them to acquire at the end of the term and the teaching strategies that will best help their students obtain such goals.
