Asbestos is an extremely hazardous material that can cause serious respiratory health issues when exposed to large amounts of it. If you work in construction, it's important to know what precautions to take should you ever be working in an environment where you could be breathing in its fibres.

This Asbestos Awareness (Category A) Training Course will help you to familiarise with the safety procedures you need to follow, in order to protect your health in the workplace. You'll learn about the dangers of working with asbestos and how to comply with the law, to ensure you and your colleagues are 100% safe.

Please note that construction workers that plan to carry out work that may disturb asbestos will be required to take the Category B or C courses, in addition to this introductory course.

The course is divided into 5 accessible, interactive modules and includes an assessment at the end.

• Introduction to Asbestos - Introduction, courser objectives, the basics of asbestos, where is asbestos discovered, who is likely to be affected by asbestos, the different forms of asbestos, health concerns related to asbestos.
• Legal Framework - Introduction, advantages of tackling health and safety, the control of asbestos regulation 2012, responsibilities of duty holders, asbestos training, responsibilities of employees, asbestos surveys, management surveys, refurbishment and demolition surveys, HSG 264.
• Risk Assessment - Topics to be covered, what is the risk assessment, how to recognise the hazards, identify the hazards, understanding who is at risk, assessing the risk, recording findings and putting solutions in place, evaluation revising.
• Asbestos Containing Materials - The risk of ACM, friability, illnesses caused by asbestos exposure, the link between asbestos and smoking, workplace exposure limit (WEL), equipment used to protect the respiratory system, observing health.
• Emergency Procedures - Introduction, EM1, how to manage injury or illness, how to manage a fire outbreak, how to break an asbestos leak.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course learners will be able to demonstrate that they can:

• Learn about the different types of asbestoses and how to deal with each safely.
• Understand how to minimise the risks of dealing with asbestos.
• Identify how your work may fit in with the law and the responsibilities and protections you and your employees have.
• Develop your ability to spot potential hazards and assess and evaluate risks.
• Discover what to do if you have come into contact with asbestos.

Assessment:

At the end of the course, there will be an online assessment, which you will need to pass to complete the course. Answers are marked automatically, allowing you to know straight away whether you have passed. If you haven't, there's no limit on the number of times you can take the final exam. All this is included in the one-time fee you paid for the course itself.
