Course Goal:
To provide students with a strong foundation in American Sign Language (ASL) within 10 hours of intensive instruction.

Course Objectives:

• Master the ASL Alphabet:
• Accurately fingerspell the entire English alphabet.
• Recognize fingerspelled words and short phrases.

Acquire Core Vocabulary:

• Learn and use common vocabulary related to:
• Personal information (name, age, occupation, family)
• Everyday objects (food, colors, numbers 1-100)
• Family members
• Basic greetings and introductions
• Common verbs (to be, to have, to go)

Develop Basic Grammatical Concepts:

• Understand and use basic sentence structure in ASL.
• Learn and apply basic grammatical concepts (, subject-verb agreement, negation).

Enhance Communication Skills:

• Engage in simple conversations with the instructor and other students.
• Ask and answer basic questions.
• Express basic needs and wants.
• Participate in basic role-playing scenarios.

Gain a Basic Understanding of Deaf Culture:

• Learn about the history and culture of the Deaf community.
• Understand the importance of eye contact, facial expressions, and body language in ASL communication.

Course Content:

• Module 1: Introduction to ASL and Deaf Culture
• History and culture of the Deaf community.
• Basic communication principles in ASL.
• Introduction to fingerspelling the alphabet.

Module 2: Core Vocabulary & Basic Grammar

• Numbers 1-100, colors, days of the week.
• Family members, occupations, and personal information.
• Basic greetings and introductions.
• Simple sentence structure (subject-verb-object).
• Basic verb conjugations.

Module 3: Communication Skills

• Role-playing scenarios: Ordering food, asking for directions, introducing oneself.
• Basic conversational practice with the instructor and other students.
• Deaf cultural awareness and communication etiquette.

Teaching Methods: Fast-paced instruction with high student engagement.
Hands-on activities: Extensive use of games, role-playing, and interactive exercises.

Repetition and reinforcement: Frequent review and practice of key vocabulary and signs.

Visual aids: Utilize flashcards, videos, and demonstrations throughout the course.

Assessment:
