When you're new to management everything about management can seem important to know.

  Well, we've picked 7 things to focus on as a First-Time Manager. 

Key 1 is 'Manage Yourself'. It sounds pretty obvious but everything from what you say and do, to your voice tone to your dress code to the look that's on your face most of time - these things all make a huge difference to how seriously people take you and how much they're likely to co-operate. 

KEY 2 Manage Your Time. It's also pretty obvious. If you can't manage your time, and the new demands on it as a manager, you just won't get anything done

KEY 3 Manage Your Team. Most of us can spend over 2000 hours a year at work. Being part of a high-performing team is one of the best experiences a working person can ever have and it makes those 2000 hours fly by

KEY 4 Manage Performance. We've already said; it is managers who make companies perform.

KEY 5 Manage Your Boss. If you can't properly measure performance, you can't increase it or improve it. We give you ways to do it and identify and measure your value as a manager, simply and sensibly. 

It sounds the wrong way round to suggest you manage your boss, doesn't it?

But your boss is probably your biggest customer. If he or she isn't happy with what you do and how you do it you're not very likely to succeed so there are a few big, basic things to do and to never do, to keep your boss happy.

KEY 6 Manage Your Influence Having the title of manager gives you what's known as 'positional power', but for long-term success, you have to be able to influence - not simply order people to do things. 

KEY 7 Manage Development. You get more done in a co-operative team, as we've said. But if each person gets the chance to develop and to become even better at what they do, your success as manager is pretty much guaranteed. We list some of the top strategies for developing your people.
